Senators Feinstein and Hutchison Denounce Trumped-Up Charges Brought Against Daw Aung San Suu Kyi, Burma’s Democratically Elected Leader; Renew Calls for the Immediate and Unconditional Release of Suu Kyi and All Burmese Political Prisoners Senators
Feinstein and Hutchison co-chair the Senate Women’s Caucus on Burma
Washington, DC –
U.S. Senator Dianne Feinstein (D-Calif.) and Kay Bailey Hutchison (R-Texas) today denounced the new trumped-up charges brought against Daw Aung San Suu Kyi, the democratically elected leader of Burma. The Senators, who Co-Chair the Senate Women’s Caucus on Burma, also renewed calls for the immediate and unconditional release of Suu Kyi and all Burmese political prisoners.
Following is a joint statement from Senators Feinstein and Hutchison: “We are deeply concerned about the announcement that Aung San Suu Kyi, the democratically elected leader of Burma, will stand trial on charges of violating her house arrest. The accusations against her are baseless and without merit. This court case represents yet another desperate attempt on the part of the despotic military junta to silence her voice and stifle the will of the people of Burma who overwhelmingly support Suu Kyi and her call for democracy, human rights, and the rule of law for Burma. We once again express our solidarity with Suu Kyi and her cause of freedom. We strongly urge that Aung San Suu Kyi and all political prisoners be released immediately and unconditionally.”
